The paintings in this series fail to portray the tropical beauty of the Top End of Australia as a tourist wonderland.
Rather, in the context of global kakistocracy (a system of government which is run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens), environmental degradation and imminent financial collapse, I wanted to engage with the absurdity and perhaps fragility of the socio-cultural template imposed upon this ancient land.
I see the artist within culture as a trickster and as such, a kind of cultural irritant meant to disrupt the status quo and pose uncomfortable questions.
The figures in these paintings are imprisoned within imbecilic tableaux vivants distilled from a dystopian Australian culture that is as alien and destructive to the landscape as the cane toad.
